Desde hace tiempo leo el blog de Paul Verhaeghen, autor belga que reside en Atlanta, Georgia y trabaja como psicólogo cognitivo, o profesor de psicología cognitiva--y que además, tradujo su propia novela, Omega Minor, al inglés. Si quieren saber más, vayan a Wikipedia, o a Google, o pulsen en su nombre para ver su blog, porque iré para el grano. Cito aquí un comentario suyo que encontré interesante:

Young writers are often told to write about what they know. That advice is solid. Except that it is often read as: write about what you already know. Nine out of ten times, that leads to something utterly dead. I say: If you want to write, go out in the world and GET to know something. Then write, with wonder, about your fresh discovery.
